March 28, 2011
ATLANTA - After sending the University of Houston women's basketball program back to the NCAA Tournament in his first season as head coach, Todd Buchanan was selected as the 2011 RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Region 4 Coach of the Year, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Monday.
Buchanan was one of eight finalists for the 2011 RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA National Coach of the Year award, which was given to Stanford's Tara VanDerveer. Joining Buchanan as region honorees were Geno Aureimma (Connecticut), Katie Meier (Miami), Patt Summitt (Tennessee), Kim Mulkey (Baylor), Matthew Bollant (Green Bay) and Teresa Weatherspoon (Louisiana Tech).
Buchanan was the lone first-year head coach to guide his team to the NCAA Tournament this season, as the Cougars made their first appearance since 2005.
Buchanan was also named the Conference USA Coach of the Year, becoming only the second coach in Houston history to earn the accolade, while also becoming only the second first-year head coach to achieve the feat in the league's 16 years of existence.
The Cougars claimed the C-USA regular season title for only the second time in program history en route to a perfect 16-0 mark in conference action, becoming only the second team in league history to run the table in the regular season.
Houston ended the season with a 26-6 overall record, marking the second-most wins in program history, while also reeling off a school-record 17-consecutive games that lasted for over two months.
The Cougars also returned to the national rankings under Buchanan's guidance for the first time since Dec. 28, 2004, reaching as high as No. 22 nationally.
