Houston Draws Texas A&M in Preseason WNIT

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Houston Cougar Women’s Basketball team will face Texas A&M in the first round of the Preseason WNIT, inside Reed Arena in College Station, Texas, the organization announced Wednesday.

Making their first appearance in program history in the Preseason WNIT, the Cougars will open the 2017-18 campaign against the Aggies at 7 p.m., CT on Friday, Nov. 10. Houston and Texas A&M have met 58 times in program history, and the Cougars hold the all-time advantage at 34-24.
The tournament features a 3-game guarantee with the winner of the opener advancing to play the winner of New Orleans and Louisiana. Second round games are scheduled for Nov. 12-14 with the semifinals being played on Nov. 16 and the finals being held on Nov. 19. The championship game will air live on CBS Sports Network at 3 p.m.

“The Preseason WNIT is a great mix of tried-and-true teams with up-and-coming teams, all eager to start their season in the national spotlight,” Executive Director of the WNIT Renee Carlson said. “We are excited to help showcase what each of them can do.”

Houston will join 15 other schools including CSU Northridge, Drake, George Mason, Liberty, Louisiana, Louisville, Michigan, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Old Dominion, Oregon, Saint Francis (PA), Southeast Missouri State, Texas A&M and Toledo in the 2017 field.

Half of the 16-team field earned berths into the NCAA postseason in 2015-16 including Michigan who is ranked No. 21 in ESPN’s early rankings for 2016-17 and is the defending champion of the postseason WNIT. Drake, Louisville, Oregon, Texas A&M and Toledo were NCAA Tournament teams in March, while Milwaukee and Saint Francis (PA) competed in the Women’s Basketball Invitational.



The Cougars will join CSU Northridge and New Orleans in making their first appearance in program history in the Preseason WNIT.

To be recognized with this selection is a testament to how much hard work and effort we are putting in every day.”
