UH Student-Athletes Post Record GPAs for Fourth Straight Semester

June 11, 2014

HOUSTON -In what has become a repetitive process, student-athletes from the University of Houston Department of Intercollegiate Athletics once again posted record academic marks in a semester with their 2014 spring semester efforts. This spring marked the fourth consecutive semester for UH student-athletes to break academic records.

Student-athletes from Houston’s 17 sport programs set the UH Athletics record for cumulative grade point average after the spring semester with an overall GPA of 2.88 after recording the best spring semester mark in department history at 2.82. Eleven of Houston’s 17 sport programs currently carry a cumulative GPA of 3.02 or better.

In addition to the spring semester results, the Men’s Cross Country and Women’s Tennis programs earned the NCAA's Public Recognition Award given to programs with Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in the top 10 percent of their respective sports during the 2012-13 academic year.

“Our Athletics Department consists of student-athletes who constantly strive to achieve their highest academic, athletic and personal aspirations and staff who are determined to support the student-athletes reaching their goals,” Houston Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Mack Rhoades said. “Through those efforts, coupled with an outstanding curriculum and a Tier One Univeristy faculty and staff, we are excited for our future leaders and congratulate them on their recent academic achievements.”

Men’s Golf, Women’s Golf, Football, Tennis and Women’s Track and Field all posted their best-ever cumulative GPAs after the spring semester, while Men’s and Women’s Golf programs recorded their best-ever spring semester GPAs. Men’s Basketball and Men’s Track and Field were just behind with their second-best cumulative GPAs following the spring semester.

Houston’s Tennis program led all 17 sport programs with a spring semester GPA of 3.40 and a cumulative GPA at 3.48. The Softball program finished the semester second in both spring GPA (3.37) and cumulative GPA (3.38).

On the men’s side, golf posted the spring’s top GPA at 3.31 and cumulative GPA at 3.14. The 3.31 spring semester GPA marked the highest semester GPA in the history of the Houston Men’s Golf program.
