Cougars Kick Off Mentor Program With Luncheon
June 19, 2014
HOUSTON--- The University of Houston Women's Basketball program officially launched its original student-athlete mentor program, as it hosted an introductory luncheon on Thursday inside the Athletics/ Alumni Center on the campus of the University of Houston.
The Cougars hosted over 20 different successful businesswomen from a plethora of different career fields for a luncheon, as the student-athletes became acquainted with their new mentors.
"We're so excited to take part in this program," said senior forward Terran Alford. "These women have accomplished some amazing things and have gone through what we're currently going through. I can't wait to hear the guidance they have to give."
The event featured multiple videos (seen below) of the Cougars introducing themselves, while sharing their various hobbies, future goals, and aspirations with their new mentors.
"This is such an awesome thing to be a part of," said new mentor and local salon owner Athena Laster. "The University of Houston has played such a big part in my life and I couldn't think of a better school to get involved with."
"I had so many mentors growing up and there is no way I'd be where I am today without them, so to get the opportunity to be on the other side and give back is a big deal for me."
The mentorship program will focus on critical developmental areas such as life skills, problem-solving skills, self-control skills, stress management skills, and conflict resolution techniques. Student-athletes will meet with their mentors every few weeks as they strive to not only succeed on the basketball court, but off the basketball court as well.
