Head Coach Ronald Hughey and the Houston Cougar Women’s Basketball program have announced the addition of North Carolina transfer Alyssa Okoene. Okoene will redshirt the 2017-18 season due to NCAA transfer rules and have three years of eligibility beginning in 2018-19.
“Alyssa loves the hard work and dedication that comes with being successful at this game,” Hughey said. “She takes so much pride in her defense, rebounding and helping her team be as successful as possible. Alyssa is a tremendous addition to our program.”
Okoene, a 6-2 forward, played in all 31 games for UNC in 2016-17 while making 10 starts for the Tar Heels. She averaged 2.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per contest while blocking 19 shots in nearly 500 minutes.
“Alyssa is a long and athletic post with off-the-charts potential,” Hughey said. “She is superb in transition, running the floor like a guard, with soft hands to catch and finish on the move. She has an emerging offensive game in the paint and will benefit tons from working with Coach Vicky Picott. Alyssa is also a great defender with the ability to guard in and out of the paint and guard almost every position on the court.”
Okoene was a 3-star prospect by ESPN upon graduation from North Shore High School. With the Mustangs, Okoene tallied 8.1 points and 9.2 rebounds per night while picking up 10 double-doubles during her senior season to lead North Shore to a 36-2 overall record and a berth in the state semifinals. Out of high school, Okoene was recruited by Duke, Northwestern, Louisiana Tech and UTEP before signing with UNC.
Okoene is the fifth student-athlete to join Hughey’s 2017-18 recruiting class. The Cougars added three transfers from the Junior College ranks including Octavia Barnes (Hinds Community College), Myyah West (Jones County Junior College) and Nasheemma Oliver (Northwest Florida State), while also adding incoming freshman Julia Blackshell-Fair. Blackshell-Fair was the No. 92 rated senior in the class of 2017 by ESPN and the 26th rated guard.
