    the gold.

Jones, who signed with the University of Houston last fall, helped the USA Basketball women's junior world championship qualifying team (5-0) capture the gold medal at the COPABA Women's Junior World Championship Qualifying Tournament in Mar del Plata, Argentina, on Sunday, July 30. The standout from Bay City, Texas, was selected to the junior national team earlier in the year and with a gold medal performance in the Argentina qualifier, the U.S. has earned a berth to the FIBA Junior World Championship for Women that will be held in the Czech Republic in 2001.

Team USA defeated previously unbeaten Cuba (4-1) 69-46 in the gold medal game Sunday. The U.S. coasted through the qualifier with an average winning margin of 50.6 points in its five victories.

In the tournament Jones averaged 4.0 points per game and converted on a team-best 90.9 percent of her shots from the floor. She finished fourth on the team in steals and seventh in assists despite averaging only 8.0 minutes per game.

Jones will be a freshman for the University of Houston this fall. The Lady Cougar basketball team opens its 2000-2001 season at home in Hofheinz Pavilion against McNeese State on November 17.
