Lady Cougar Basketball Team Releases 2000-2001 Schedule

  • 2000-2001 Schedule

HOUSTON (July 31) -- The University of Houston women's basketball team will face another rugged schedule in 2000-01 under the direction of third-year head coach Joe Curl. UH will play as many as 17 of its 29 regular season games against teams that participated in postseason tournaments last season, including perennial NCAA powers Georgia and Louisiana Tech.

"This is not a schedule for the weak of heart," said Curl. "We have once again put together an extremely competitive schedule, and we wouldn't have it any other way. We feel our schedule has a good balance to it, and that our non-conference games should prepare us for Conference USA play."

The Lady Cougars open the 2000-01 at home on Nov. 17 against McNeese State followed by a road game against Big 12 power Nebraska on Nov. 22.

Houston stays on the road and travels to Malibu, Calif., to play in the first of three tournaments this season. UH faces host school Pepperdine on Nov. 25 and either Kentucky or Missouri the following day.

After a stop at UT-San Antonio on Nov. 29, the Lady Cougars return home to host the Hilton Houston Hobby Airport Classic from Dec. 1-3. In a prearranged format, Houston plays Indiana on Dec. 1 and Louisiana Tech on Dec. 3.

Following its tournament, UH hits the road once again to play Georgia on Dec. 10 before heading to Honolulu, Hawaii to take part in the Ala Moana Hotel Paradise Classic from Dec. 18-20. The field includes host school Hawaii, as well as Detroit and Eastern Washington.

The Lady Cougars conclude 2000 with a home game against Middle Tennessee State on Dec. 30.

Houston opens 2001 on the road with conference games at South Florida on Jan. 2 and at Cincinnati on Jan. 5. UH will play four of its first five C-USA games on the road, with the lone home game coming on Jan. 7 against Louisville.

The Lady Cougars get to enjoy the friendly confines of Hofheinz Pavilion during a stretch in which Houston plays seven out of nine games at home. UH ends the season with three consecutive road games, including one against non-conference foe UT-Pan American on Feb. 20 before heading to Milwaukee, Wis. to compete in the C-USA Tournament from Mar. 2-5.

This will mark the third straight season that the Lady Cougars play at least 10 teams that participated in postseason play the previous season. In all, seven teams on Houston's schedule qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season (Georgia, Louisiana Tech, Nebraska, Pepperdine, UAB, Marquette, Tulane) and six advanced to the NWIT (Hawaii, Missouri, Cincinnati, DePaul, Memphis, Southern Miss).
