Cougars Announce 2017-18 Non-Con Schedule

Aug. 8, 2017

HOUSTON – Head Coach Ronald Hughey and the Houston Cougar Women’s Basketball program are excited to announce the 2017-18 non-conference schedule, which features the program’s first trip to the Preseason WNIT and 11 additional contests, including a home matchup against former Southwest Conference rival Texas Tech on Dec. 3.

“We are really excited for the season, because our student-athletes have put in the work to get better,” Hughey said. “We have a very competitive group that did a lot of growing together as a single unit this summer, and I’m really proud of them. Our schedule gives us the opportunity to put that growth on display and continue to improve before heading into the American Conference play.”

Houston kicks off the season with a trip to College Station, Texas, where it meets Texas A&M in the first round of the Preseason WNIT at 7 p.m., on Nov. 10. Second-round action of the prestigious tournament will be held Nov. 12 and 13, while semifinal contests will run Nov. 15 and 16 with the finals taking place on Nov. 19. Opponents in the later round are to be determined.

Following the Preseason WNIT, Houston heads to Massachusetts for a trio of contests during the Thanksgiving holiday break. Houston visits Boston College on Nov. 22, before heading to Amherst, Mass., to take on Liberty (Nov. 24) and Northeastern (Nov. 25) in the UMass Thanksgiving Tournament.

Houston wraps the opening month of the season with a trip to Texas State on Nov. 28.

The Cougars open the month of December at UT Arlington on Dec. 1 before returning to Houston for the first time to host the Red Raiders. The Cougars will play their home contests at H&PE Arena on the campus of Texas Southern while renovations on the $60-million Fertitta Center continue.

Houston plays host to East Tennessee State on Dec. 10 before heading back on the road for their final away contest of the non-conference slate when they meet Big 10 opponent Rutgers on Dec. 16.

A three-game home stand wraps up the non-conference portion of the season beginning with a contest against Incarnate Word on Dec. 18. The Cougars welcome George Mason to the Lone Star State on Dec. 21 before closing out the slate at home against Columbia on Dec. 28.

Houston’s non-conference schedule features three teams that made postseason tournaments in 2016-17, including Texas A&M which advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Texas State and UT Arlington advanced to the Women’s Basketball Invitational and Women’s NIT, respectively.

The 2017-18 American Athletic Conference schedule will be announced at a later date. Houston will meet UCF, UConn and Memphis at home while facing USF, Temple and Tulsa on the road only and meeting each of the remaining opponents twice.
