HOUSTON – Fourth-year Head Coach Ronald Hughey is excited to announce the hiring of Edsel Hamilton and Charley Ochoa to the Houston Cougar Women’s Basketball staff for the upcoming 2017-18 season.
ABOUT EDSEL HAMILTON
Hamilton, Houston’s new Director of Operations, joins the Cougars from East Texas Baptist University, where he served as the program’s head coach. With the Tigers, Hamilton led the squad to a 17-win season in 2015-16, the most the program had seen in eight years, and a berth in the ASC Tournament Semifinals.
Hamilton’s student-athletes excelled both on the court and in the classroom at ETBU where he had student-athletes claim six separate conference honors as well as four student-athletes who earned ASC All-Academic Honors and Morgan Garrett who earned the ASC Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor.
Prior to his time with the Tigers, Hamilton spent eight seasons at Baylor University. Hamilton earned his master’s degree from Baylor while serving as the Graduate Assistant/Video Coordinator from 2007-09 before being promoted to Coordinator of Video Operations. In 2011, Hamilton accepted a role as Baylor’s Coordinator of Basketball Operations before taking the next step in his career as Director of Basketball Operations in 2012, a position he held until 2015.
While at Baylor, Hamilton was a member of one of the top programs in the nation, collecting six Big XII Tournament Championships and earning seven Sweet Sixteen, five Elite Eight and two Final Four appearances, before collecting the NCAA Championship during Baylor’ 40-0 season in 2011-12.
ABOUT CHARLEY OCHOA
Ochoa joins the women’s team as Video Coordinator after spending the previous two seasons in the same role with the Houston Men’s Basketball team. Ochoa, a 2009 graduate of UNLV will handle all duties involving video production as well as any video needs of the Houston Women’s Basketball staff.
Prior to joining the men’s program in 2015, Ochoa served one season as the Graduate Assistant at Webber International. With the Warriors, Ochoa coordinated team practices and workouts with the coaching staff and supported coaching staff as the player development coach.
Before joining collegiate athletics, Ochoa served as a junior-varsity and assistant varsity coach for Martin High School in Laredo, Texas.
