Houston Basketball to Host Cougar Red Madness on Friday, Oct. 11
Oct. 2, 2013
HOUSTON - As the fall season approaches, the University of Houston Men's and Women's Basketball programs will host Cougar Red Madness at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11, inside the Yeoman Fieldhouse in the Athletics/Alumni Center.
All fans are invited to this FREE event. Current UH students will receive free food and t-shirts while supplies last.
Men's Head Coach James Dickey and Women's Head Coach Todd Buchanan will introduce the student-athletes from their respective teams, and players from both teams will take part in games throughout the night, including a 3-point shooting competition, a slam dunk contest and a 2-ball competition, featuring lucky students.
A year ago, guard Danuel House claimed the title in the slam-dunk contest, while Women's guard Porsche Landry took home the title in the 3-point shooting event. Now, the Men want to own both crowns, but the Women aren't ready to relinquish their title.
Students will be able to leave their permanent mark on the new Football Stadium, which is currently being built. A large I-beam will be set up in the alley between the Athletics/Alumni Center and Cougar Field (baseball stadium) for students to sign.
That I-beam will be placed prominently inside the new Football Stadium, which is slated to open in August 2014.
Students who sign the beam are encouraged to take photos and send them to Houston Athletics' Instagram account at HoustonCougars. Use the hashtag #ISignedTheBeam.

ABOUT THE MEN'S TEAM
Nine lettermen and three starters return for the Cougars in 2013-14 after posting a 20-win season and advancing to the College Basketball Invitational Quarterfinals a year ago.
Competing in the new American Athletic Conference for the first time, the Cougars will play 17 home games inside historic Hofheinz Pavilion this season, including games against perennial powers UConn, Cincinnati, Temple, Memphis and defending national champion Louisville.
Houston faces each member of the 10-team conference in home-and-away contests, beginning 8 p.m., Dec. 31 against UConn inside Hofheinz Pavilion. Each of the Cougars' 18 American Athletic Conference regular-season games will be televised nationally on the ESPN family of networks or CBS Sports Network.
The season opens at 7 p.m., Nov. 5 with an exhibition contest against St. Thomas. The regular season tips off at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 8 against Texas State with both games inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
Junior forward TaShawn Thomas posted 16.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game to rank among the Conference USA's top-five leaders in both categories and was named to the league's First Team and All-Defensive squad.
After averaging 12.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game during his inaugural collegiate season, forward Danuel House was an easy selection as the C-USA Freshman of the Year.
ABOUT THE WOMEN'S TEAM
The Cougars return four of five starters and nine of 10 letterwinners from last year's team, accounting for 74 percent of last season's total scoring.
Despite playing with five freshmen and nine total newcomers last season, Todd Buchanan's rebuilt squad won 10 more contests than the previous year and knocked off the top two teams in Conference USA during the regular season.
Sophomore forward Marche' Amerson was named to the C-USA All-Freshman squad after ranking second on the team with 9.1 points per game and 10.1 points per contest in league play. Amerson set a freshman record by starting in all 30 contests and placed in the top 10 of six other freshman records.
Yasmeen Thompson returns for her senior year after making a splash in her first season at Houston, where she led C-USA and ranked 10th all-time in program history in field-goal percentage (.553) while adding 8.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest.
The Cougars' schedule is highlighted by 15 home games and 14 contests against postseason squads from a year ago, including defending national champion UConn and national runner-up Louisville.
Houston opens the 2013-14 season on Nov. 8 against Mississippi State inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
