Taylor Named to C-USA Women's Basketball Preseason Team
Oct. 14, 2009
HOUSTON - Having already made a major impact on the program in her first two seasons on campus, University of Houston forward Courtney Taylor earned another accolade Wednesday as she was selected to the Conference USA Women's Basketball Preseason Team. The junior from Crockett, Texas, earned First Team All-Conference and C-USA All-Defensive Team honors a year ago as she emerged as the unquestioned leader of a young Houston team. She averaged a team-high 16.5 points and 10.1 rebounds and also had 2.29 steals per game, which ranked fourth in C-USA. Against league champion SMU on Feb. 20, Taylor fell one steal short of just the fourth triple-double in school history, ending play with 23 points, 12 rebounds and nine steals. With the All-Defensive Team member leading the way, the Cougars led the league in blocks (148) and was third in steals (9.43 per game). In 2008-09, Taylor collected 16 double-doubles to rank her second in the UH history annuals for most double-doubles in a single season. For her career, Taylor has 25 career doubles-doubles, trailing only Sancho Lyttle, who enjoyed 35 double-double performances from 2003-05 for the most in program history. Joining Taylor on the Preseason team were UCF's Emma Cannon, who headlines the squad as she was voted the Preseason Player of the Year, edging out two-time C-USA Player of the Year Jareica Hughes of UTEP. Also receiving the honor were Pauline Love of Southern Miss and SMU's Brittany Gilliam. Cannon and Love were unanimous selections. Houston women's basketball kicks off its 2009-10 campaign on Nov. 9 when it hosts the Houston Jaguars in an exhibition contest at Hofheinz Pavilion before its season opening road trip to Gardner-Webb on Nov. 13. 2009-10 CONFERENCE USA PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR Emma Cannon, UCF 6-2 Jr. F Rochester, N.Y.
