HOUSTON - After getting a final tune-up in an exhibition win over the Houston Jaguars Monday night, the University of Houston women's basketball team is ready to kick things off Friday when it heads to Boiling Springs, N.C., to tip-off the 2009-10 season. The Cougars and Runnin' Bulldogs get things underway at 7 p.m. (CST) from GWU's Paul Porter Arena.

Fans can hear the game by accessing the All-Access broadcast on www.UHCougars.com with Jeremy Branham calling the action.

The Cougars, led by 12th year head coach Joe Curl and eight returning letterwinners, will be looking to improve on last season's 19-10 campaign that saw them finish in second place in Conference USA with an 11-5 league record. Four starters highlight the list of returners for UH, which returns 86.9 percent of its total offensive production from a year ago.

During the exhibition win over the Jaguars on Monday, the Cougars got a 24-point performance from junior guard Brittney Scott, who made 8-of-16 field goals, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range. Last season, Scott emerged as a lethal scoring threat, averaging 12.8 points per game and showing her explosive offensive ability in a career-high 27-point game during the regular season finale at East Carolina.

In addition to Scott, Houston got a reliable performance from junior forward Courtney Taylor, who has made getting a double-double a regular occurrence in her young career. The Crockett, Texas, native scored 15 point to go along with 17 rebounds against the Jaguars and enters 2009-10 campaign with 25 career double-doubles. Taylor trails only former Cougar Sancho Lyttle, who had 35 during her time at UH, for the most double-doubles in program history.

Junior forward Lesslee Mason was productive in the exhibition contest, chipping in with 12 points and 12 rebounds, signaling opponents that Taylor will not be the only Cougar to contend with in the low post.

The all-time series between Houston and Gardner-Webb is a very brief one with the only other meeting between the schools coming last year in Houston. During the contest, the Cougars featured five players who scored in double-figures, led by Scott's 17 points, to hand the Runnin' Bulldogs a 79-58 defeat at Hofehinz Pavilion.

Friday is also the season opener for Gardner-Webb, which returns nine letterwinners and four starter off last season's 17-15 club. The team is led by sixth year head coach Rick Reeves.
