HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team announced Wednesday that a pair of outstanding student-athletes, Macy Morton and Zalika Dyson, had signed letters of intent to join the program for the 2009-10 school year.

"The two girls we have coming in, Macy and Zalika, both bring some important depth to our program and we have high hopes for both of them," UH head coach Joe Curl said. "Since we are only graduating one senior, we had saved a pair of scholarships, and we looked at a lot of kids but we are certainly excited about the two we got."

Morton is currently in her senior year at Winnsboro High School in Winnsboro, Texas, where she has been the starting point guard for the Red Raiders for the last four seasons. A 5-feet-7-inch perimeter player, Morton was selected as the 2006 District 13-3A Newcomer of the Year while a freshman and garnered Defensive Player of the Year accolades each of the last two seasons. Additionally, she helped Winnsboro to the Texas State 3A championship game in 2007 and a state semi-final appearance in 2008, while guiding her summer travel team, the Texas Fire, to a BCI National Championship in 2006. During her prep career, Morton has averaged eight points, eight assists and four rebounds per contest. Her sister, Megan, is currently a sophomore guard for the Cougars.

"Macy is more of a true point guard but she also has nice size for the position," said Curl. "She handles the ball extremely well and also has a great shot. Additionally, she is outstanding in the classroom and on track to graduate as her high school's salutatorian. She has played on a some really great summer teams and was recruited by several other schools, but we're excited to get her and think she will be a great fit for us."

A native of Albuquerque, N.M., Dyson is a 6-foot-2-inch center who is a senior at Cibola High School. A four-year letter winner for CHS, Dyson was also an outstanding soccer player who garnered All-Metro honors in that sport. On the hardwood, Dyson is a two-time All-District selection and a team captain who has also picked up Most Improved Player and Best Defender accolades from her prep team. In addition to notching a career-high 24 points in a district championship-clinching win over Rio Rancho, Dyson averaged 8.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game as a junior and helped CHS claim back-to-back district championships for the first time in school history.

"Zalika brings a lot to the table," said Curl. "She is big and long, every bit of 6 feet 2 inches tall. She is the type of player that can step in and play a lot of minutes for us right away with her ability on defense to change opponents shots, but also as she develops her game on the offensive end of the court. As with Macy Lynn, Zalika is a an extremely intelligent player, who should do very well academically in college."
