Lady Cougars Kick Off Season with Big Win Over McNeese State
University of Houston Women's Hoops beats McNeese State, 104-45
HOUSTON, Texas - University of Houston women's basketball team defeated McNeese State, 104-45, Friday night to kick off their 2000-01 season, marking the first time Houston has scored over 100 points in a regular season game since scoring 104 points against Texas Southern on December 16, 1995. The 104 points scored by the Lady Cougars was just 14 points shy of breaking the all-time school record of 117 points scored against Hawaii Pacific on December 26, 1984.
Leading the way for the Lady Cougars was freshman Chandi Jones, who hit seven of her 11 shots from the field for 23 points. Senior Cathy Lida bucketed 20 points, junior transfer Valerie Muoneke scored 14 points and senior Monet Sykes followed with 10 points. The Lady Cougars also combined to hit 30 of 40 free throws as a team.
The Lady Cougars are now 6-3 lifetime against McNeese State and improved to a perfect 5-0 against the Lady Cowgirls on home court at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Houston travels to Nebraska to take on the Lady Cornhuskers in their next game on Wednesday, November 22, with an 8:30pm game time. They travel to Malibu, California, for a tournament hosted by Pepperdine University next weekend. The Lady Cougars return home to take on Indiana on Friday, December 1, at 7pm.
