Lady Cougars Lose to Nebraska in Lincoln
Houston falls to the Lady Cornhuskers, 65-53, in first road game of the season
LINCOLN, NEBRASKA The University of Houston womens basketball team fell to Big 12 opponent Nebraska by a final of 65-53 at Bob Davey Sports Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Wednesday night.
Leading the way for the Lady Cougars were freshman Chandi Jones and junior transfer Valerie Muoneke, who each scored 16 points. In addition, Jones made five of six free throws and her 31 attempted field goals is the fourth-most in a single game in school history behind Sharion Higgins, who coincidentally made 32 attempts against Nebraska on November 26, 1977.
Jones, Muoneke and senior Cathy Lida each registered eight rebounds, and senior Jessica Shanklin had four steals.
The Lady Cougars came out strong in the first half, taking a quick lead of eight points before Nebraska came back to tie the game and take a 33-24 lead into half-time. Houston played well defensively throughout the game and allowed the Lady Cornhuskers just 219 turnovers to Nebraskas 30.
The Lady Cougars travel to Malibu, California, for a weekend tournament hosted by Pepperdine University that will also feature Kentucky and Missouri. Houston takes on Pepperdine in their first game on Saturday evening at 5:00pm (CT). Their game on Sunday depends upon the outcome of Saturdays game, but they will either face Kentucky or Missouri at either 1:00pm or 3:00pm.
