Lady Cougars Drop Their First Game In the Pepperdine Classic
Houston falls to the Lady Waves, 83-59; Will play Kentucky in semi-finals on Sunday
MALIBU, Cali. - Damaris Hinojosa's 17 points led the Lady Waves of Pepperdine University to a 83-59 win over the University of Houston women's basketball team in the first game of the Pepperdine Classic on Saturday, November 25.
Joined by teammates Sarah Richen and Tamara McDonald, the Lady Waves scored 49 points in the second half to runwaway with the victory. The Lady Cougars came out strong in the first half and entered half-time down 34-30.
Leading the way for the Lady Cougars was the freshman from Bay City, Texas, Chandi Jones, who was the lone Lady Cougar to score double-digits with a career-high 20 points. Jones, along with teammate Norma Noel, had seven rebounds and three turnovers and has now scored a total of 41 points in Houston's first three games of the season.
Fellow freshman Nicole Oliver registered a block, two steals, five rebounds and scored five points, including three of her four free throw attempts. Senior Cathy Lida made four of her six free throw attempts and scored four points.
With their loss tonight, the Lady Cougars play Kentucky in the semi-final round of the tournament on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm (CT). Kentucky fell to Missouri in the other match-up of the tournament.
