SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - Senior Monet Sykes had a career-high 10 rebounds and three Lady Cougars scored in double digits as the University of Houston women's basketball team won their second straight game with a 71-57 win over the Lady Roadrunners on Wednesday, November 29, in San Antonio.
The Lady Cougars went into halftime with a 33-31 lead and turned it up a notch outscoring UTSA, 38-26, in the second half to hold on for the victory. With the victory the Lady Cougars improve to 14-0 lifetime against UT-San Antonio.
Sykes and freshman Chandi Jones led the Houston offense with 16 points each and senior ShaRonda Lasseter bucketed a season-high 12 points. Sykes shot an impressive eight-of-12 from the field and Jones hit 50 percent of her shots as well as three of four free throw attempts. Jones has now scored in double digits in each of Houston's five games this season.
Sykes' 10 rebounds were both a Lady Cougar season high and a personal high, surpassing her previous career-high of seven rebounds, which she accomplished five times, most recently against UT-Pan American on February 25, 2000.
Jones also added two blocks and two steals, and senior Jessica Shanklin's five assists also aided in the Lady Cougars' attack.
With the win tonight, the Lady Cougars improve to 3-2 on the season. They return home this weekend to host Indiana University and Louisiana Tech in the annual Hilton Houston Hobby Airport Classic at Hofheinz Pavilion. The Lady Cougars face Indiana in their first game of the tournament on Friday, December 1, with a 7:00pm (CT) tip-off.
