HOUSTON, TEXAS - Indiana junior Heather Cassady nailed a three-point shot with 11 seconds left in the game to give the Lady Hoosiers (7-0) a 79-77 lead, and following a Houston foul, nailed both free throw shots for a four-point lead as Indiana held on to hand the Lady Cougars a 81-77 loss Friday night, December1, at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Indiana senior Rachael Honegger had a double-double, scoring a team-high 18 points and registering 10 rebounds, to lead the Lady Hoosiers' offense which came back from a 15-point deficit in the first half. Indiana then quickly saw their lead dwindle as the Lady Cougars came back to tie and take a 76-75 lead on senior ShaRonda Lasseter's two-point bucket with 1:27 remaining.
Houston standout freshman Chandi Jones once again lead the scoring brigade for the Lady Cougars with a season-high 29 points, the most by a Lady Cougar since Jennifer Jones scored 36 against Southern Miss on February 16, 1998. Jones shot 7-of-15 from the field and hit two three-pointers, as well as 13 of 17 free throw attempts. Lasseter and fellow senior Monet Sykes joined in the double figures in points, Lasseter with a season-high 21 and Sykes with 11.
Defensively for the Lady Cougars, Lasseter brought down a Houston season-high 11 rebounds, senior Jessica Shanklin had six assists and Sykes had three blocks and two steals.
With the loss tonight, the Lady Cougars are an even 3-3 on the season. They play No. 9-ranked Louisiana Tech in the final
game of the Hilton Houston Hobby Airport Classic on Sunday, December 3, at 3pm (CT) at Hofheinz Pavilion. Indiana takes on
Louisiana Tech tomorrow (December 2) at 7:00pm at Hofheinz in the second game of the tournament.
