HOUSTON (AP) (Dec. 3) - Freshman Chandi Jones scored 32 points to lead Houston to a 71-52 upset over No. 9 Louisiana Tech Sunday in the Houston Hilton/Hobby Classic.
Jones, who was on Team USA at the World Championships last summer, hit 11 of 20 from the field as Houston (4-3) blew open a close game in the second half.
Cathy Lida had 15 points and ShaRonda Lasseter added 11. Each had eight rebounds for the Lady Cougars.
Takeisha Lewis scored 16 and Ayana Walker 12 for Louisiana Tech (6-2).
With the help of five straight three-pointers, including three by Jones, Houston outscored Tech 13-7 the last six minutes of the half to take a 34-29 lead.
Houston increased its lead to 38-31 in the first 2:15 of the second half. The Lady Cougars maintained that much of an advantage for the next four minutes before going on a 11-0 run - eight of them by Jones - for a 53-37 lead with 8:32 to play.
Houston's lead grew to 24 points when Jones' three-point play made it 71-47 with 1:22 to play.
