HOUSTON, TEXAS -- This weekend the University of Houston women's basketball team travels to Athens, Georgia, to play the Lady Bulldogs of the University of Georgia, currently ranked No. 5 by the Associated Press and No. 6 by ESPN/USA Today, on Sunday, December 10, at 2:30 p.m. (CT).
Houston's match-up against Georgia marks the second consecutive game that the Lady Cougars will play a top-ten team this season. The last time the Lady Cougars faced top-ranked teams in back-to-back games came last season when they faced No. 5 Georgia (L, 68-98) on December 5, No. 25 Texas (L, 61-85) on December 7 and No. 3 Louisiana Tech (L, 49-94) on December 28 in consecutive games.
The Lady Cougars are coming off an upset win over No. 9 Louisiana Tech in a 72-51 final last Sunday, December 3, at Hofheinz Pavilion in Houston. The 19-point upset win over the ranked LaTech marked only the fifth time in Conference USA history--and the first time since February 1997--that a C-USA team defeated a top ten non-conference opponent. In addition, Houston's 19-point win was the largest margin of victory over a top 10 team in the history of C-USA, and with the win Houston became the fifth different C-USA school to knock off a Top 10 opponent, joining Charlotte, DePaul, Louisville and Southern Miss.
In other big news for the Lady Cougars this week, freshman Chandi Jones was named Conference USA Player of the Week on Monday following an outstanding four games in which she led the team in scoring--amassing 94 points in four games--en route to a 3-1 record during the week. She scored a season-high 32 points against LaTech, the most scored in a single game by a Lady Cougar since former Houston player Jennifer Jones bucketed 36 against Southern Miss on February 16, 1998.
The Lady Cougars are currently 4-3 on the season and off to their best start since posting a 4-3 record in the first seven games of the 1995-96 campaign.
