Women's Basketball Falls To Georgia, 92-61
ATHENS, Ga. (Dec. 10) - A week after their upset win over No. 9 Louisiana Tech at Hofheinz Pavilion, the University of Houston women's basketball team traveled to Athens, Georgia, to take on the No. 5 Lady Bulldogs, and the Lady Cougars were outpowered by Georgia 92-61 at Stegeman Coliseum Dec. 10.
Leading the Lady Cougars was once again freshman Chandi Jones, the Conference USA Player of the Week following her 32-point performance in the LaTech game, with 15 points. Senior point guard Cathy Lida matched her personal career high in nailing three three-point shots, and scored a total of nine points in the game. Junior Claire Staavropoulos scored a season-high nine points off the bench, shooting four-of-six from the field.
"This is the best team we have played," Houston coach Joe Curl said. "What makes this team so special is great coaching and great kids that are able to be coached. This game was won in two areas - pressure defense and the ability to chase down missed shots."
The Lady Bulldogs controlled the game from the first half, and had four players to score in double figures, with senior twins Kelly and Coco Miller leading the way with 19 and 16 points, respectively.
With the loss this afternoon, the Lady Cougars fall to 4-4 on the season.
They travel to Honolulu, Hawaii, to join Detroit, Eastern Washington and
Hawaii at the Ala Moana Hotel Paradise Classic tournament, hosted by the
University of Hawaii. Houston faces Eastern Washington in the first round on
Monday, December 18, at 5 p.m.
