Houston Women's Basketball Falls in Overtime Thriller
LAFAYETTE, La. (Nov. 23) - Saturday in its season-opener the University of Houston women's basketball team battled No. 19 ranked Kansas for 40 minutes, but to no avail. On Tuesday night in Lafayette, Louisiana, the Lady Cougars fought even longer than that but the result was still the same.
Against the Jayhawks erratic shooting cost the UH women a chance for an upset. Against UL-Lafayette it was inconsistent free-throw shooting, especially in the final 25 minutes, that kept the team from claiming its first road win since the spring of 1998. Houston fell to the Ragin' Cajuns by the score of 74-70 in overtime.
In a nip-and-tuck game from almost start to finish, the contest seemed destined for overtime. There were a total of 13 ties in the game and no team had a lead of more than six points after the opening two minutes. That fact didn't bode well for the Lady Cougars as it was Houston that held a 65-59 advantage with just under four minutes to play.
The Ragin' Cajuns however used its home court advantage to go on a 7-1 run over the final 3:53, highlighted by a reverse layup with 30 seconds left to tie the game 66-66. A Houston three-pointer in the closing seconds missed and the game remaind deadlocked. Lafayette then won the overtime 8-4 to claim a 74-70 win its season-opener. The Lady Cougars, who converted on just 11-of-19 second-half free throw attempts, fell to 0-2.
Houston junior forward Cathy Lida led all players with 19 points, including 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range. Nakea Mitchell came off the bench to score 15 points and grab five rebounds. Guard Jessica Shanklin had six assists and five steals in her first start.
The Lady Cougars will again be on the road on Saturday, November 27, against McNeese State. Tipoff will be at 2:00 p.m.
