LAKE CHARLES, La. (Nov. 27) - In a last second thriller, the University of Houston women's basketball team were defeated by McNeese State University Saturday night in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Newcomers Nakea Mitchell and Cathy Lida led Houston in scoring with 13 and 10 points, respectively, as the Lady Cougars lost to McNeese State 67-66 in the final seconds of the game. With key play from newcomer Monet Sykes and senior Kokeesha Randle, Houston registered a total of four players scoring in double digits.
McNeese State jumped out to an early 9-0 lead to begin the first half. Though the Lady Cougars did not score until the 16 minute mark, Houston would eventually rally behind two free throws from sophomore Rosiland Carter, before going into half time down by a score of 35-26.
In the second half, the Houston fell behind by as many as 13 points, making the score 60-47 with only 4:23 left in the game. After a quick run the Lady Cougars were back in the game, and with one minute left in the game, Kokeesha Randle sunk two free throws to bring the Cougars within three.
The Lady Cougars struggled to tie up the game, but McNeese State held them with a 66-63 lead. After a made free throw from the Cowgirls with only seven seconds left on the clock, Houston's Jessica Shanklin sank a three point basket to bring the Cougars within one. With just .08 seconds on the clock, McNeese State inbounded the ball to win the game.
The UH women will play their next game of the season Monday night in Hofheinz Pavilion against New Mexico. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00.
