HOUSTON (Dec. 5) -- Never to back down from a challenge, the University of Houston women's team played No. 2 ranked Georgia Sunday afternoon in Hofheinz Pavilion in the finale of the Hobby Airport Hilton Invitational. The Lady Bulldogs defended that ranking with a 98-68 victory over UH in front of 977 fans.
The Lady Cougars battled Georgia in the early going, jumping out to a 14-11 lead at the 14:25 mark in the first half. Georgia's twin-sister guards, Kelly and Coco Miller, however helped spark a 15-3 run by the Lady Bulldogs over the next four minutes that put UGA ahead 30-17. The duo then helped stretch the margin to as many as 21 points before Houston cut the lead to 49-33 at the intermission.
The Lady Cougars couldn't do much better in the second half as the nation's No. 2 ranked team outscored UH 49-35 on the way to a 98-68 final. Houston was co-led by junior forward Cathy Lida and junior center ShaRonda Lasseter, who both scored 14 points on the afternoon. The Lady Cougars again struggled on its offensive glass, getting outrebounded on the Houston-end by a margin of 26-8.
The Miller twins led four Lady Bulldogs who scored in double-figures. Kelly poured in 23 while Coco scored 21. Georgia improved to 9-1 on the season while UH fell to 1-5. In the first game of the day's double-header, the University of North Texas rallied to defeat Alcorn State by the score of 73-62. With the win North Texas improved to a perfect 6-0 on the season.
For the Lady Cougars the challenges keep coming. Houston will next face nationally ranked Texas on the road in Austin on Tuesday, December 7. Tipoff with the Lady Longhorns will be at 7:00 p.m.
