Women's Basketball Falls to No. 3 Ranked LA Tech
RUSTON, La. (Dec. 28) For the fourth time this season the University of Houston womens basketball team was defeated by a nationally rankled opponent. On Tuesday, December 28, the Lady Cougars were defeated on the road by No. 3 ranked Louisiana Tech 94-49 in the first round of the State Farm Holiday Classic in Ruston, LA.
Houston battled the nations No. 3 ranked team in the early going. The Lady Techsters could manage just a four-point advantage, 15-11, midway through the first half. La Tech however turned up the shooting and the rebounding to go on a 23-7 run at the 15-minute mark. With just 28 percent shooting and a 32-to-16 deficit on the boards, the Lady Cougars fell behind 54-29 at the intermission.
La Tech then continued the impressive display to outscore Houston 40-20 in the second half on the way to a 94-49 final. Lady Techster guard Betty Lennox led all players with 22 points in 22 minutes of action. UH junior guard Danielle Fenderson paced the Lady Cougars with 11 points while junior forward Monet Sykes added nine.
Houston, who had already faced No. 6 Georgia, No. 23 Kansas and No. 25 Texas, fell to 1-7 on the year while La Tech improved to 9-1. The Lady Cougars will next face Southeastern Louisiana in the consolation game of the tournament on Wednesday. Tipoff will be at 5:30 p.m. in Ruston.
