HOUSTON, TX (Jan. 2) -- The University of Houston women's basketball team was defeated by Conference USA National Division rival South Florida 73-63 in the league-opener for both teams Sunday afternoon in Hofheinz Pavilion. With the loss the Lady Cougars fell to 2-8 on the year. The streaking Bulls meanwhile improved to 11-1 with their third-straight win.
South Florida took advanatge from the opening tip, building a 25-7 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. Houston then settled down on offense and turned up the pressure on defense to cut the margin down to just five at the half, 31-26.
In the second half, USF true freshman Aiya Shephard came off the bench to score 14 points and keep the Bulls out in front. Senior forward Charmain Leslie led all players with 20 points as USF improved to 1-0 in C-USA action.
Three players scored in double-figures for the Lady Cougars, led by junior guard Danielle Fenderson's 13 points. Junior center ShaRonda Lasseter posted a double-double with 10 points and a season-high 10 rebounds.
Houston will next be in action on Tuesday, January 4, with a non-conference game at Texas-El Paso. Tipoff with the Lady Miners will be at 6:00 p.m. The Lady Cougars will then return home for a pair of C-USA games against league rivals Saint Louis and UNC Charlotte on January 7 and 9, respectively. Start times will be 7:00 p.m. Friday and 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
