HOUSTON, TX (Jan. 9) For the first time in two years the University of Houston womens basketball team won back-to-back Conference USA games, defeating league-rival UNC Charlotte 57-52 Sunday afternoon in Hofheinz Pavilion. With four wins in their last five games, the Lady Cougars improved to 5-8 overall and 2-1 in C-USA action.
After Houston built a 25-21 halftime lead, the Lady 49ers of UNCC tied the game 27-27 with 15:39 left in the second period. A quick 11-2 run by Houston however gave the Lady Cougars a comfortable 38-27 lead in would not relinquish. UNC Charlotte twice cut the lead to five, first with 5:15 remaining and then with 12 seconds left in the contest on a three-pointer by junior guard Tonya Phifer.

Though UH shot only 29.3 percent for the game, the Lady Cougars scored 22 of their 57 points off 25 UNCC turnovers. The 49ers, led by Jameka Jones 16 points, fell to 7-7 on the season and 2-1 in league play.
Houston will next be in action with a road game at UAB on Thursday, January 26. Tipoff with the Blazers will be at 7:00 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala.
