HOUSTON, TX (Jan. 21) - The University of Houston women's basketball team was defeated for the third-straight time, falling to No. 20 ranked Tulane by a score of 92-74 in front of 1,306 fans Friday night in Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Green Wave raced to a 17-point lead in the first five and a half minutes of the game, building a 21-4 advantage on the strength of sophomore guard Sarah Goree's 11-point shooting spree. Tulane increased the margin to 24 with 5:10 remaining, but a 19-6 run by the Lady Cougars cut the lead to just 11, 49-38 at the half.
In the second half, senior All-America candidate Grace Daley scored 13 of her 25 points as the Green Wave worked with a comfortable lead of 20-or-more points for most of the period on the way to their 15th win of the season. Daley reached two career milstones in the process, becoming the Conference USA career record holder for steals (253) and free throws (499) as Tulane improved to 4-2 in league play, avenging a pair of road losses last week.
Houston was led by junior guard Monet Sykes' career-high 16 points, six rebounds and three steals in 29 minutes of action. Junior center ShaRonda Lasseter added 14 as UH fell to 5-11 on the year and 2-4 in C-USA.
Houston will next be in action at home in Hofheinz Pavilion on Sunday, January 23, with a C-USA game against Southern Miss. Tipoff will be at 2:00 p.m. in Hofheinz Pavilion.
