Lady Cougar Basketball Team Falls to Marquette, 66-38
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Jan. 30) The University of Houston women's basketball team fell for the second time in its weekend road trip Sunday afternoon (Jan. 30) in Milwaukee. The Lady Cougars were defeated by Conference USA leader Marquette, 66-38, in a league game at the Milwaukee Arena.
Houston battled the C-USA leader for most of the first half but a late Marquette charge put the Golden Eagles ahead by 18 at the intermission. UH junior guard Jessica Shanklin hit a three-point basket from the right corner to tie the game at 16 with just under 6:30 left to play in the first period. Marquette however then went on a 20-2 run to close the half and take a 36-18 lead into the locker-room.
The second half didn't go much better for the Lady Cougars. Houston converted on just three of 29 shots and struggled on the boards. For the game UH was out-rebounded on its offensive glass by a margin of 43-11. The Lady Cougars, now 6-13 overall and 3-6 in C-USA action, were led by Shanklin's nine points and career-high eight rebounds.
Marquette remained atop the C-USA standings by improving to 16-4 on the year and 8-1 in league play. The Golden Eagles were led by center Abbie Willenborg's double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds in 28 minutes of work.
Houston will next be in action with a home game vs. UAB on Friday, February 4. Tipoff with the Blazers will be at 7:00 p.m. in Hofheinz Pavilion.
