HOUSTON, Texas (Feb. 6) - Behind the outside-inside combination of Malissa Bush and Yolanda Reed, the Memphis Lady Tigers notched their 14th win of the season with an 86-61 win over the Houston Lady Cougars in front of 2,557 in Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Lady Cougars (6-15 overall, 3-8 Conference USA) were led by a quartet of double-digit scorers, including a team-high 13 from center ShaRonda Lasseter. Joining Lasseter in double digits were forward Monet Sykes with 12 and 10 a piece from both forward Angela Curl and guard Nakea Mitchell.
Memphis (14-8, 8-3 C-USA) jumped out to a 45-32 halftime lead, thanks in part to .679 (19-28) shooting from the field. The Lady Tigers cooled slightly in the second half, clicking on .552 (16-29) of their shots, but actually outscored Houston, 41-29, in the final half.
Bush led all scorers with 20 points, while Reed added 18 on eight-of-10 shooting. Forward Tiffany Adkins had 15 and Shannon Hemp chipped in 11 on a perfect five-of-five from the perimeter.
Both teams were plagued by the turnover bug, committing a combined 50 turnovers; however, the Memphis press forced the Cougars into several backcourt miscues which led to easy Lady Tiger baskets and added to the UM lead.
For the game the Cougars shot only .404 (23-57) from the field and .464 (13-28) from the line. The Lady Tigers had a slight rebounding edge, 38-34, but Lasseter led all rebounders with a game-high eight.
Next up for the Lady Cougars is a February 10 road trip to nationally-ranked Tulane in New Orleans, while Memphis returns home to play host to UAB on February 13.
