NEW ORLEANS, La. (Feb. 10) -- The University of Houston women's basketball team could not overcome a fast start by Tulane and dropped a Conference USA game Thursday night on the road in New Orleans by the score of 83-53.
The Green Wave quickly built an 11-point lead, 19-8, in the first six-and-half minutes of the contest and stretched the margin to 26, 45-19, at halftime. Tulane (20-3 overall, 9-3 C-USA) then used a 15-0 run midway through the second half to take its largest lead, 72-32, with just over eight minutes remaining. The Lady Cougars responded with a 19-5 run and managed to cut the 40-point deficit down to 26 before the 83-53 final.
Four Tulane players scored in double-figures, led by junior center Janell Burse's 19 points and seven rebounds. The Lady Cougars won the rebound battle 40-38 but UH could not overcome 51.5 percent shooting by the Green Wave. Houston was paced by junior center ShaRonda Lasseter's season-high 17 points in 24 minutes of action. Junior forward Cathy Lida added 12 and junior guard Norma Noel had her second-best scoring night with 11 points in nine minutes.
The Lady Cougars fell to 6-16 overall and 3-9 in league play. Houston will complete the weekend road trip in Hattiesburg, Miss., with a C-USA game against Southern Mississippi on Saturday, February 12. Tipoff will be at 11:00 a.m. in a game that will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net.
