TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 27) -- After a big home win Friday night, the University of Houston women's basketball team could not make it two in a row and were defeated by Conference USA National Division rival South Florida Sunday afternoon in Tampa by a score of 89-62.

Even with the loss however, the Lady Cougars held on to the tournament's No. 10 seed and will next face No. 3 seed Cincinnati Friday at the Conference USA Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky. Lady Cougars and UC Bearcats will play in the last game of the day on Friday, tipping off at 7:00 p.m. at Freedom Hall.

Houston had all it could handle from South Florida on Sunday. The Bulls shot a steady 54.8 percent from the floor for the game and broke a close 40-33 game at halftime wide open in the second period. In the second half the Lady Cougars were just 9-of-29 from the floor and USF outscored UH 49-29. The Bulls were paced by Aiya Shepard and Monica Echeverrria, who poured in 28 and 22 points respectively.

Houston was led by junior center ShaRonda Lasseter's "double-double" of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Jessica Shanklin added 11 as UH fell to 7-20 on the year and 3-13 overall. USF improved to 12-15 and a matching 3-13 in league play, but the Lady Cougars earned the No. 10 seed ahead of South Florida (No. 12) and UNC Charlotte (No. 11), who also ended the regular season with a 3-13 C-USA ledger.

Houston's seven regular season wins are the most for the women's team since 1998. The Lady Cougars battled Cincinnati to a close 66-64 loss just last week in Hofheinz Pavilion.
