HOUSTON, TEXAS - The University of Houston Lady Cougars extended their season-high winning streak to four straight and won their third-straight game over a Conference USA opponent for the first time in school history as they took down the South Florida Bulls by a final of 78-49 on Sunday afternoon (January 21) at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The big win also marks the first time in school history that the Lady Cougars have defeated a C-USA foe twice in the same season, as Houston beat South Florida, 82-59, to kick off C-USA play on January 2 in Tampa. In addition, the four-game winning streak marks the first time Houston has won four consecutive games since a six-game winning streak during the 1994-95 season.
Leading the Houston offensive attack this afternoon was senior center ShaRonda Lasseter, who shot 10-of 15 on the day for a game-high 22 points, including 13 in the second half. Following Lasseter in reaching double figures in points were fellow seniors Cathy Lida (14) and Jessica Shanklin (11) and freshman standout Chandi Jones (12). Shanklin nailed three of her five three-point attempts and Jones shot 6-of-8 on the day.
Lida pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and Shanklin had a game-high seven assists to go along with her four steals. The Lady Cougars capitalized on 28 South Florida turnovers and had 20 total assists.
With the win Houston improves to 12-6 overall on the season, their highest win total since closing out the 1995-96 season at 12-16. Their five wins in C-USA play are the most victories ever since joining the conference in 1996-97. The Lady Cougars return to action at home on Friday, January 26, as they host Memphis at Hofheinz Pavilion with tip-off scheduled for 7:00pm.
