AUSTIN, Texas – University of Houston junior Leonie Harm overcame a slow start, which saw her post four bogeys through her first six holes to finish with a 73 in Tuesday’s Final Round and finish fifth at the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
Starting Tuesday’s action off No. 4 on the 6,491-yard, par-72 University of Texas Golf Club, Harm suffered the first of seven bogeys on the day and added three straight bogeys on Nos. 7-9.
Fortunately, the Gerlingen, Germany recovered with an impressive effort on Nos. 10-18. Her streak began with an eagle on the 526-yard, par-5 11th hole and continued with a birdie on the par-5 14th hole.
Although she gave a stroke back with a bogey on No. 14, Harm closed out the back nine with three straight birdies for a 9-hole total of 31. She collected the fourth top-five finish of her career and her first of the 2017-18 season.
Shooting a team score of 300 – the third-best team total in Tuesday’s Final Round – the Cougars moved into fourth with a 54-hole total of 890.
Host Texas captured the team title at 866, while Furman finished second at 881 with Arizona State one stroke back. Following the Cougars, UNLV (899), Kent State (900), Texas Tech (900), Miami (Fla.) (903), Oklahoma (905) and San Diego State (905) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
Individually, Texas’ Sophia Schubert earned medalist honors with a score of 6-under 210 to finish four strokes in front of teammate Emilee Hoffman. Furman teammates Haylee Harford and Natalie Srinivasan finished third and fourth with scores of 215 and 216, respectively.
Senior Allie Andersen tied for 16th at 221, while senior Megan Thothong joined her and Harm among the top-20 leaders with a score of 222 to tie for 18th. Junior Yuka Kajiki tied for 63rd at 235, while senior Courtney Tibiletti finished 70th at 237.
Following the Betsy Rawls Invitational, the Cougars return to action in the Lone Star State when they tee off at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational. That three-day tournament will be held Oct. 22-24 at Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas.
