SAN ANTONIO, Texas – University of Houston senior Megan Thothong posted three birdies and an eagle on the way to an even-par 72 to lead the Cougars and tie for ninth after the First Round at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational.
Competing on the 6,450-yard, par-72 course, Thothong started on a rough stretch with back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 3-4 but returned to even par with an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole. She added another birdie on the seventh hole.
The Dallas native began her back nine on a positive note with a birdie on No. 11 and closed out the day with her third and final birdie on No. 18.
As a team, the Cougars posted a team score of 295 to stand in a tie for fifth with Oklahoma. Arkansas held the First-Round lead at 281 and stood nine strokes ahead of TCU. Kansas State was in third at 291, while host UTSA was in fourth at 294.
Following the Cougars, Maryland, Texas A&M, Denver and North Texas rounded out the top-10 leaders.
Individually, Kansas State’s Connie Jaffrey posted a 66 Sunday to lead Arkansas teammates Maria Fassi and Dylan Kim by three strokes.
Junior Leonie Harm joined Thothong among the top-20 leaders with a 73 to tie for 16th. Senior Courtney Tibiletti and junior Maddy Rayner were tied for 29th at 75, while senior Allie Andersen was tied for 42nd at 76.

The Cougars return to action in the Second Round with an 8:30 a.m., split-tee start Monday. The tournament wraps up with an 8:45 a.m., shotgun start Tuesday
Following the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational, the Cougars tee off at the Trinity Forest Invitational on Oct. 30-31 at Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas.
From there, the team concludes its fall season when it tees off at the Baylor Invitational, hosted at Club Campestre San Jose in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico on Nov. 3-5.
