HOUSTON - After helping lead the first University of Houston Women's Golf team as a volunteer assistant coach during the recent fall season, Mary Michael Maggio was promoted to full-time assistant coach, head coach Gerrod Chadwell announced Tuesday.
Maggio joined Houston Women's Golf in late August. In her new role, she will assist Chadwell in all aspects of the program including recruiting, travel coordination and skill instruction.
During the recent fall season, she worked closely with junior Courtney Ferguson, sophomore Raegan Bremer and freshman Emily Gilberth as the trio competed as individuals at several events. Bremer finished in a tie for sixth at the Cardinal Cup in mid-September, thanks to a final-round 70, while Bremer tied for 12th at the Sam Houston State/Harold Funston Invitational in the fall finale.
"We are pleased to have Mary Michael join our staff and the University of Houston in a full-time role," Chadwell said. "She has been a leader for our young women, on and off the course, and has a bright future in this profession. As we prepare for the spring season and plan for the program's future, I am excited to have her by my side every step of the way."
"I am grateful to Mack Rhoades and Gerrod and the Houston Athletics administration for another wonderful opportunity," Maggio said. "I have learned so much from Gerrod and our young women during the last six months and can't wait for the spring season to start."
After competing her first two seasons at LSU (2009-11), Maggio transferred to Texas A&M for her final two years. There, she won two individual titles, including the 2012 Big 12 Conference crown. For her impressive efforts, she was named to the All-Big 12 Team and the Big 12 All-Tournament Team.
Maggio was honored as the Big 12 Golfer of the Month for April 2012 and was named a GolfWeek Player of the Week in October 2012.
By the time that her collegiate career was finished, she had led her teams to seven tournament championships and earned seven top-10 and 10 top-25 individual finishes.
Throughout her career at both schools, she was an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and served as the Women's Golf team representative for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee with the Aggies.
