EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Houston Golf programs recently enjoyed a fun day during the annual Dave Williams Pro-Am sponsored by Insperity.

Approximately 100 players competed as teams of four in this annual event, which was held on the Tournament Course at The Woodlands Country Club on Monday. Together, everyone raised more than $140,000 to benefit Houston Men's and Women's Golf.

Before the round started, competitors had a chance to purchase former Houston players and stars from the Champions Tour in an auction. Bill Rogers, Billy Ray Brown, Keith Fergus, Steve Elkington, Blaine McCallister, John Mahaffey, Jim Thorpe, 2013 Insperity Championship winner Esteban Toledo, Dana Quigley and John Harris graciously donated their time Monday morning to compete with Houston fans and assist Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke and Associate Head Coach Chris Hill.

By the time the auction - under the leadership of Houston lettermen and auctioneer Mike Neece - had ended, more than $40,000 had been raised, thanks to the generous support of donors.

For the first time in the event's history, Houston Women's Golf coaches took part in the event as head coach Gerrod Chadwell and assistant coach Mary Michael Maggio joined the Pro-Am.

Fans can support Houston Men's Golf through Project 17, a restricted giving club and the program's official fundraising group. All donations to Project 17 are used only for the support of the Men's Golf program. Project 17 is one of many restricted giving funds under Cougar Pride, Houston Athletics' student-athlete fundraising arm.

On the Women's Golf side, fans can give to the P.A.R. 4 program. Standing for "Pride, Accountability and Respect" and representing the commitment of the four original student-athletes who started Houston Women's Golf in 2013-14, P.A.R. 4 provides annual financial support directly to Houston Women's Golf for needs above and beyond the program's operating budget.

For more information about Project 17, P.A.R. 4, other restricted funds or to make a gift, please contact Cougar Pride at 713-743-Go-UH (4684) or email cougarpride.uh.edu.

    ABOUT DAVE WILLIAMS
The tournament is named after legendary former Houston head coach Dave Williams, who led the Cougars to 16 NCAA team national championships from 1962-87. In his brilliant career, Williams guided Houston to 14 conference titles and more than 340 team tournament titles across 24 states and foreign countries.

Known as the "Father of Collegiate Golf", Williams created the scoring system that continues to be used at collegiate events today.

He was inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America, Texas Sports and Texas Golf halls of fame as well as the University of Houston Hall of Honor. In addition, the GCAA named its national men's collegiate golf Coach of the Year award in his honor in 1988.

Williams passed away in December 1998.
