HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women’s Golf program became a little larger after Dana Puyol recently signed a National Letter of Intent, Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell announced Tuesday.
Puyol – whose last name is pronounced Poo-Yole – will compete as a freshman with the Cougars beginning in 2018-19 and have four years of eligibility remaining.
The Barcelona native has been an award-winning player throughout her career and competed as a member of the Spanish National Team since 2014.
“Dana is a great player with a lot of experience at the international level,” said Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell, who has led the Cougars to four team tournament championships during his career. “She is a great all-around player and really hits it well. She is absolutely dying to be a Cougar, and I love her spirit. Dana will be the heart and soul of our team in the years to come.”
In 2017, she earned a pair of top-3 finishes, including a first-place showing at the Andalusia Cup 2017 Under 18.
In 2016, Puyol captured individual championships at six tournaments with 10 top-10 finishes. She tied for ninth at the European Ladies Club Trophy Championship after shooting 69-71 in the first two rounds and tied for first at the Spanish Under-16 National Tournament.
Competing in 2015, she earned medalist honors at five tournaments, including the Cataloina Under-16 Regional Tournament, the XIV Juvenile Championship of La Cerdanya and the Catalona Under-16 Regional Match Play Championship.
In 2014, Puyol total individual championships at eight tournaments, including the Torremirona Cup, Balear Islands Under-14 Tournament, Interprovincial Under-14 Spanish Championship and the Catalonia Under-14 Regional Championship.
The Cougars open their spring season at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship on Feb. 18-20, 2018, at English Turn Country Club in New Orleans.
From there, the team will play host to their own The Dickson on Feb. 26-27 at The Woodlands Country Club in The Woodlands, Texas.
