HOUSTON -- Veterans Memorial High School star Julie Lucio became the newest member of the University of Houston Women's Golf program when she recently signed a National Letter of Intent, Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell announced Thursday.
Lucio -- whose last name is pronounced Loo-Cee-O -- will compete as a freshman with the Cougars beginning in 2018-19 and have four years of eligibility.
"Julie has won just about everything that she has played in down in the Valley," said Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell, who has led four Cougars to five individual championships during his career. "She does everything very well. With all her accomplishments, I look forward to seeing her make the transition from high school to the NCAA Division I level. She will fit in well with our culture moving forward."
As a freshman, she earned medalist honors in five of seven tournaments and captured the district championship with a score of 148, thanks to a Final Round 71 at Laguna Vista Golf Club.
One year later, she again captured five individual championships and defended her district championships with another score of 148, thanks to a First-Round 70, at Tony Butler Golf Course.
She finished third at the Region 35-6A Championships with a score of 151 and placed 22nd at the Class 6A State Championships.
As a junior, Lucio finished the season with a 70.23 average with 16 of 19 total rounds under par and won seven individual championships. She captured her third straight district individual title after firing back-to-back 71s and was recognized as the District Most Valuable Player.
She also won the Regional 32-5A individual title with a score of 143, including a Final-Round 69.
The Cougars open their spring season at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship on Feb. 18-20, 2018, at English Turn Country Club in New Orleans.
From there, the team will play host to their own The Dickson on Feb. 26-27 at The Woodlands Country Club in The Woodlands, Texas.
