Cougar Golf Team Makes it Four in a Row at C-USA Championships
NAVARRE, Fla. (Apr. 19) -- The University of Houston golf team successfully defended its three-year streak of winning the annual Conference USA championship Wednesday afternoon at The Hidden Creek course in Navarre, Florida. With all five Cougar golfers finishing among the top eight in the 60-player field, including back-to-back individual medalist Andy Sanders, Houston coasted to a comfortable 22-shot victory in the 54-hole Championship. The Cougars' fourth-straight C-USA title was by 22 strokes over runner-up UAB. The win also marked Houston's 18th conference championship in golf dating back to 1956. Excluding 13 years when UH competed as an independent in college sports, the Cougars have won or shared 18 league golf titles in C-USA (4), the Southwest Conference (9) and Missouri Valley (5) conferences. On Wednesday the Cougars shot their best round of the tournament (283). No other team had a better round than Houston on any of the respective days and UH was never seriously threatened after the first day when the lead was just four stokes over South Florida. Houston senior B.J. Staten paced the team Wednesday with a three-under par 69, but it was junior Andy Sanders' steady 54-hole total of four-under par 212 that earned the native of Merritt Island, Florida, his second-consecutive C-USA medalist award. Sanders is ranked as one of the Top 30 collegiate players in the United States and the win was the third of his UH career. He won by three strokes over both Staten (215, one-under) and UAB senior Chris Devlin. The trio were the only players to finish below par at Hidden Creek. UH senior James Edmondson finished in sole possession of fourth place (217, one-over). Senior Chris Morris tied for fifth (218, two-over) and sophomore Wade Ormsby tied for eighth (219, three-over). The All-Tournament team included Sanders, Staten, Edmondson and Morris as well as Devlin (UAB), Chris Campbell of Louisville and Nick Lykins of Cincinnati. All-Conference honors, which reflected individual play for the full spring and fall seasons went to Devlin, who was voted player-of-the-year by league coaches, Sanders, Staten, Morris and Ormsby. Brett Hitchcock of South Florida, Jeff Curl of UNCC, Campbell of Louisville, Jim Herman of Cincinnati and Michael OConnel of DePaul also earned all-league accolades. Southern Miss Justin Emil earned the freshman of the year award with a four-over par score of 220. South Florida Coach Jim Fee was voted coach of the year honors by his peers. League coaches also voted to return next year's championship to the Club at Hidden Creek.
