HOUSTON - Houston Soccer opened its 2014 season with a 0-0 (2 OT) tie against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Friday, at Carl Lewis Field.
The match was a rematch from the Cougars 2-1 win in the 2013 season opener in Corpus Christi. That match was the first in Islander program history.
The defenses showed out in the 2014 version, in what turned out to be a physical game that featured 20 fouls and three yellow cards.
The Cougars saw one of their best chances to score come from an unlikely source when defender Meghan Brascia played a ball down from right in front of the midfield circle with just under 10 minutes to play. Brascia ripped a shot from 25 yards out that clanged off the cross-bar and floated away.
Jordan Brown was solid in goal for Houston in her first official action as a Cougar. The junior-transfer played all 110 minutes in goal and picked up three saves.
Including Brown, seven different players saw their first minutes with Houston in the match. Freshmen Georgi Dolence, Margo McEntire, Vanessa Almaguer, Kristina Schulz, Kelsey Thein, and Selena Peters all made their collegiate debuts against the Islanders.
Season tickets for the upcoming 2014 Houston Cougar soccer season are on sale now for just $50. Houston's schedule features nine home games with different themes on display for each game.
