HOUSTON - The Houston Cougars soccer team picked up its first victory of the season, as it defeated the McNeese State Cowgirls 2-0 Sunday, in Lake Charles, La.

Senior Kayla Walker scored both goals and junior Jordan Brown notched her second clean-sheet shutout of the season to lead the Cougars to victory.

"I was proud of the way we came out today," head coach Chris Pfau said. "We did not sit back and wait for things to happen like we did Friday night. When we do that good things happen and Kayla had a great game for us."

Walker got things started in the seventh minute when she found the back of the net on an assist from Lexa Green. Houston outshot the Cowgirls 15-8 and landed seven shots on goal to McNeese State's four despite missing four key players due to injuries.

"If you would have told me that we would not have Alexis Weaver, Shayne Clewett, Hannah Dauzat and Margo McEntire for the weekend and not only get the results that we did but to have two shutouts, I would not have thought it would have been possible," Pfau said. "It shows that the staff has done a really good job of bringing in transfers and freshman and that we have some depth."

The Cougars extended the lead 25 minutes later when Walker again put the ball in the net to make it 2-0. Walker finished the game with two goals on four shots on goal in 70 minutes of action.

Brown was solid again in goal for the Cougars picking up four more saves and her second consecutive shutout, while playing all 90 minutes of action. That marks the 39th time in Brown's career at Tennessee Tech and Houston that she has played full-time.

"Our back line and Jordan Brown have done a great job," Pfau said. "Due to injuries we had to move players in and out, but they stepped in and did a great job. Meghan Brascia has really stepped up big back there. I thought the second half of Friday's game and the entire game today she became a leader for us back there."
