Soccer Claims 1-0 Win Over Arizona State
TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Houston soccer team improved to 3-3 on the season after defeating Arizona State, 1-0, Friday night at the Sun Devil Desert Classic.
"This was a good win for us," head coach Chris Pfau said. "Arizona State is a very talented and dynamic team, and we defended then well throughout the game. It has been a long three weeks, but it was great to see our team step up like this. Everyone stepped up and we needed that. Anytime you can beat a PAC-12 school on the road is a great thing."
The Cougars got off to a slow start and were outshot by the Sun Devils, 6-0, in the first half. The teams would go into the locker room scoreless.
In the second half, Houston came to play and created some good opportunities. Junior midfielder Jasmine Martinez would knock in the only goal of the match and her third of the season on a penalty kick with 3:09 left to play. Despite outshooting Houston the entire game, ASU was unable to net a goal.
Goalkeeper Cami Koski, making her fifth start of the season, received the win on the match. Koski made six saves on 13 ASU shot attempts in route to her 12th career shutout.
