AUSTIN, Texas - Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) tied a school record with 15 saves, but it was not enough as the University of Houston soccer team dropped a 4-0 non-conference match to No. 4 Texas, Friday at Mike Meyers Stadium.
Scott is the second UH keeper to achieve the 15-save plateau. Susan Barra did it twice during the 1999 season.
Houston (3-1-1) lost its first game of the season and second-straight in the overall series against Texas. The Cougars' offense struggled to find chances for the second-straight game as UT held a 37-4 advantage in shots. In the past two matches, UH has been outshot 71-7 and has been held scoreless for 200 minutes.
The Longhorns (5-1-1) started the scoring in the game's second minute as Kasey Moore took a service from Courtney Gaines and slotted past a diving Scott.
Kirsten Birkhold tallied her first of the year in the 37th minute, giving Texas a 2-0 lead after the first 45 minutes.
Niki Arlitt tallied the rest of the scoring for UT on the evening, knocking in goals ten minutes apart in the 65th and 75th minute, respectively. It was the first multi-goal game of her career.
UH was held to three shots in the first half and just a single attempt in the second half. Crystal Trevino (Austin, Texas/McNeil HS) tallied the Cougars' only two shots on goal for the evening. Texas `keeper Dianna Pfenninger made two saves and earned the win.
The Cougars will look to rebound Sunday at 1 p.m. CDT against Texas State.
