HOUSTON - On the strength of a goal in the 14th minute by Jordan Godbolt (Austin, Texas/Travis HS), the University of Houston soccer team earned a 1-0 win over Southern Miss in the Conference USA opener for both teams Friday on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.

Godbolt's goal, her sixth of the year, came after a one-touch through-ball from Sophia Mundy (Katy, Texas/St. Pius X/Portland State) ended up at her feet. The freshman took two steps and slotted the ball to the right corner of the net past Southern Miss goalkeeper Holly Cox. The play was started out of the back on a long pass by Alex Terry (Tigard, Ore./Tualatin HS), who earned her first collegiate assist.

Houston (7-4, 1-0 C-USA), moved to 7-0-2 all-time against Southern Miss (4-5-1, 0-1 C-USA) and ran its home record to 6-0 on the season. The Cougars' four-game win streak is their longest since a six-game winning streak in the 2001 season that ran from Oct. 14 to Nov. 2.

Five minutes after Godbolt's goal, the game was suspended for nearly an hour due to lightening in the area. Following a brief warm-up, the game resumed in the 22nd minute.

UH goalkeeper Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) turned away chances by the Golden Eagles' Megan Kolts and Sarah McFadden in the 39th and 40th minute, respectively. The teams entered the half with UH holding a 1-0 lead it would never relinquish.

It was UH's turn to attack in the second half as Jennifer Dry (Norman, Okla./Norman HS) nearly scored from 40-yards out. Dry saw Southern Miss' Cox playing off her line and chipped a ball to the far post that hit the angle where the post and crossbar meet.

The Cougars had another great chance in the 51st minute after Mundy sent a ball from the far touchline to the right foot of Sarah Fisher (Katy, Texas/Cypress Springs HS). Fisher turned and unleashed a rocket that was blocked by the Southern Miss backline.

Scott made another pair of saves in the 56th and 58th minute, finishing the night with four stops. Houston won the shot battle by a 15-10 margin and earned 11 corner kicks to three for Southern Miss.

UH's last chance for an insurance goal was in the 78th minute when Stephanie Masci (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek HS) caromed one off the top of the post from just outside the six-yard box.

Scott moved her record to 7-4 on the year and earning her fourth clean sheet of the season. She is in a three-way tie for second-most shutouts in a season with Michelle Denomme' (1998) and Erin Ferguson (2002). Robin Cate set the school record with five shutouts in 2001.

Houston is back in action Sunday against UCF. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. CST at Robertson Stadium.
