BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- With a late surge, the University of Houston soccer team defeated UAB, 2-1, on Friday evening at West Campus Field to claim its first Conference USA victory. The Cougars are now 5-6-3 on the season and 1-2-3 in conference play.
"It was a good win," Head Coach Chris Pfau said. "Hopefully it is something we can build off of. It showed a lot of character to come from behind like that. We still need to get better and learn to come out stronger."
Both teams played scoreless soccer in the first 45 minutes of the match.
Half way through the second half, the Blazers would get on the scoreboard first after freshman midfielder Paige Hanks fired up and over keeper Cami Koski's hands.
The Cougars would not back down and scored two late goals to get the victory. Sophomore forward Alexis Weaver would get her second goal on the season after scoring the equalizer in the 81st minute.
The Cougars will travel to Tennessee to take on Memphis at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The match-up can be followed on GameTracker here.
