Rhodes, Byrne Lead Houston to 2-1 Victory Over Southern Miss
Oct. 16, 2009
HOUSTON - Forwards Katylen Rhodes and Lauri Byrne led the University of Houston soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Southern Miss on Friday night at Robertson Stadium. For the first time this season, Houston (4-8-2, 2-3-2 Conference USA) never surrendered the lead. The match marked the ninth win over Southern Miss (4-9-0, 0-7-0 C-USA) in program history and also continues Houston's 11 game non-loss streak against the Golden Eagles. The Cougars drew first blood early in the game at the 2:52 mark when junior forward Byrne passed across the goal box to freshman forward Rhodes who sent the ball into the corner of the net. Rhodes recorded her third career goal while Byrne picked up her first assist of the season. The Golden Eagles answered back 16 minutes later when junior midfielder Jana Mason passed just off the goal line to fellow junior midfielder Samantha Polley who slid the ball past Houston net minder Lauren Frazier. Byrne ended the knot in the 21st minute of the game when she collected a long pass down field from sophomore defender Stephanie Derieg. Byrne dribbled down the left side to the goal and then crossed it into the right corner of the net, tallying her second goal of the season. Despite multiple close calls for Houston, neither team could notch another goal. Although the score remained 2-1 for the entire second half, the Cougars tallied eight shots, totaling a season-high record of 21 shots with nine on goal. In addition to outshooting Southern Miss, Houston also had a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks. "We've been working a lot in practice on just finishing the final third," Byrne said of the win. "In last Sunday's game and today, our offense has been more successful because we've been putting more pressure on our opponents' defense. When they mess up, we do everything we can to capitalize on it."
The Cougars conclude their home schedule on Sunday against UCF at the Carl Lewis Complex at 1 p.m. For Senior Day, Houston coaches and staff will honor the three active seniors - Stephanie Beyelia, Nikki Echeverria and Christine Nieva. |
