DALLAS, Texas — Junior Alexis Weaver drained her second goal of the season in the 81st minute to put Houston Soccer on the board and tie the game at 1-1 at SMU, but a late Mustang goal netted in the final three minutes of play secured the win on Friday evening in American Athletic Conference play.

Senior goalkeeper Sydney George made her 11th career start and fourth of the season in goal, collecting three saves on five shot on goal attempts by SMU.

Weaver’s goal was fired from sophomore teammate Meghan Brascia, who contributed with her first career assist at Houston on a ball that was successfully fired from nine yards out from the left side.

SMU and Houston played to a 0-0 draw after the final 45 minutes and it took 64 minutes of play before either team found the back of the net. The Mustangs struck first, but the Cougars never backed down and evened the score less than 20 minutes later.

Looking to force overtime, Houston kept SMU at a 1-1 tie until the Mustangs used a cross from the left side that snuck in during the 88th minute for the game winner.

    POST-GAME QUOTE
    Head Coach Chris Pfau
“I give our team so much credit. They left everything out on the field and fought the entire game. I thought we did some nice things in the first half and fought back hard to tie the game up in second. We just had no legs at the end. This is the fourth game in conference where we have lost late. I am very proud of this team and not only how hard we are playing, but the way we are playing with these teams and that is nice to see.”

“I thought George and [Natalie] Juncos played a great game. That was first game Juncos played center back this season and played very well. Sydney [George] made some great saves and kept us in the game.”
