Frazier Sets Career High of Eight Saves Against Colorado College
Oct. 25, 2009 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Battling in its first snowy game of the season, the University of Houston soccer team dropped a 2-0 affair to the Colorado College Tigers Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field. Houston (4-11-2, 2-6-2 Conference USA) had a lot riding on the Colorado College (11-5-2, 7-2-1 C-USA) matchup. The Tigers secured a trip to the conference championship, along with No. 11 UCF, UTEP and Memphis, after a 0-0 knot against Rice Friday night. Facing a conference leader, the Cougars needed a win to push their way closer to a tournament bid. Unfortunately for Houston, the Tigers, comfortable in their home environment, came out on top. Colorado College took advantage of good field position early in the game, firing off two shots on goal and taking a corner kick within the first six and a half minutes of the game. Soon after, the Tigers drew a 1-0 lead at the 12:25 mark when junior midfielder Meredith Smith tallied her second goal of the season unassisted. Houston took its first chance at the goal in the 23rd minute when senior forward Nikki Echeverria recorded UH's first shot on goal of the game. The Cougars would only get one more opportunity to score in the first half when freshman midfielder Morgan Vela took at shot at the 36:09 mark. After play resumed in the second half, it appeared that Houston was going to hold Colorado College to one point, as the Tigers produced 10 shots with no results. However, with less than 12 minutes remaining, Colorado College increased the lead to 2-0 when freshman midfielder Brittany Lyman scored her fourth goal of the season. In a team effort, defenders Lauren Talbot and Elizabeth Wright picked up the assists. The Tigers tallied 22 shots, including 12 on goal - the most the Cougars have seen from an opponent all season. In addition, Houston set it's own season record with 10 saves. Sophomore keeper Lauren Frazier set a career high of eight saves while the Cougars picked up two team saves.
The Tigers continued their winning streak over the Cougars, as they stand undefeated in the all-time series (0-4-0) against UH. The Cougars travel back to Houston to conclude the season in a 7 p.m. matchup against cross-town rival Rice at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium on Friday, Oct. 30. |
