HOUSTON - Rice's Erin Scott knocked home a goal in the 89th minute, handing Houston a 1-0 loss and eliminating the Cougars from Conference USA Championship consideration, Friday in front of a record crowd of 969 on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.

After a slicing run from Clory Martin on a counter-attack down the right side, Scott received the service in front of goal. She took a dribble, struck the ball from 15 yards out and sent it past a diving Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) to put the Owls on top.

Houston (10-9, 3-6 C-USA) had a chance to equalize seconds later, but Sophia Mundy (Katy, Texas/St. Pius X/Portland State) saw her corner kick cleared away by the Rice defense. Rice (11-6-1, 3-6 C-USA), snapped a three-match losing streak and took the all-time series lead by a 3-2-1 margin.

Tonight's crowd was the largest in UH soccer history. The previous single-game best attendance was 810, set on Oct. 20, 2000, against UAB. The loss brings an end to the Cougars' season and erases their chance to qualify for the league championship, which gets underway on Nov. 1, in Dallas.

Prior to tonight's match, Houston honored its five-member senior class for their contributions to the program. The class includes: Kristen Cooper (Katy, Texas/Langham Creek HS/San Angelo St.), Jennifer Dry (Norman, Okla./Norman HS), Sarah Fisher (Katy, Texas/Cypress Springs HS), Mundy and Heather Williams (Valrico, Fla./Durant HS).

UH's Scott was busy on the evening as the Owls fired 18 shots, with eight finishing on goal. She made seven saves while Rice's Amy McClintock ended the game with three stops.

UH, despite being outshot 18-11, came up with three solid scoring chances. Mundy had a laser shot in the 34th minute that was scooped up by McClintock and the senior hit the post with a rifle in the 68th minute. Brittney Pfeiffer (Sugar Land, Texas/Austin HS) had a header off a corner kick in the first half that was grabbed on the goal line.
